Late Nite Catechism 2

We are about to host Sister Strikes Again!: Late Nite Catechism 2. It is a hilarious comedy lets us laugh at ourselves as we explore our catechism.

Tickets are now on sale and we had a good first weekend. More tickets are still available and you should be first in line to support this project. The box office will be open again this weekend (Feb 25-26th), and March 3-4. Can you help by serving in the box office after each mass? The council asks that you sign up now so that they know you will be there. Sure, you can walk up and say, "I'm here to help" However, that doesn't help plan for full support of each mass.

Please remember this is a council event, and everyone of us needs to promote this event for us to succeed. If anyone would like some tickets to sell on your own, I will be happy to oblige. Ash Wednesday and Lent

We go through rituals and adhere to customs, but do we stop to think about why? Our church is growing because we follow the customs and traditions of our church. We embrace our catechism. It makes us stronger.

Ash Wednesday was today. Take time to reflect on its meaning. It is not about being holy, it is about reflection, repentance, humility, and the beginning our 40-day journey with Our Lord.

Fish Fry - Feb 24th!

What is Lent without our traditional fish fry? The Knights have been doing it for all of the years at our current church location, but its history goes way back to the '50's and our Gimghoul Road Church.

We will be serving our dinners on February 24th, March 9th, and March 30th. We are serving from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This year we are adding baked fish for those of you who are cutting back on fried food.

Why not make it a family affair. Bring everyone. While you are at it, make sure you let your neighbors know that this event is open to everyone in our community. We also offer take out. You can pick up a family package and take it home to feed the family and friends.

Pancake Sunday - Feb 12th

Please support this Sunday’s Pancake Breakfast as a volunteer, a patron, or both! Why not tell your neighbors about the St. Thomas More Church Pancake Breakfast? The price is right and the breakfast might be considered better than that in local restaurants. After all, it's home cooking by family.

Some of your neighbors may even be Catholic and away from the church for years. The thought of an invitation from a trusted friend and memories of church breakfasts, events, and feasts may be rekindled. Help bring them home. Learn more

We continue to win over more Pancake Breakfast fans with the use of real dinnerware. You get that clinking, clanking sound! Your coffee even tastes better in a real cup!

We appreciate the extra turnout from Squires and TYM to help with the extra busing and dishwashing. Continued help from Men’s Club PB veterans has also been essential to our success.

For this coming Sunday, we will still need extra person-power and teen-power to staff all the kitchen, serving line, and dining hall duties, and to help with setup and teardown.

We will not be able to set up the hall on Saturday evening. We’ll need early help at 7am Sunday to arrange tables and chairs. The tables and chairs will remain out from a large dinner event on Saturday evening, but it will still take a lot of effort to rearrange for our use. We ask that Knights attending 7:30am mass please consider arriving at 7am to help us set up our tables and chairs before mass.

Kitchen, serving, and dining hall help is needed for Sunday.

Cooking help please arrive by 7 am.
Setup help to complete setup of the dining hall, please arrive 7:30-8 am (table & amp; chair arrangement at 7am)
Busing crews. Please arrive by 8am so we can organize our effort

We serve until 11am… sometimes a few minutes after.

What do we need the most? We need cleanup and tear-down help, especially with dishwasher duty 11 am ~12:30 pm. This has been a very successful fundraiser for STM School, the parish, and our council. Thank you for all that you are doing to make it a success.

Mortality - Tempus Fugit, Memento Mori

No, this is not a message from your insurance agent. It is a message received this weekend by your news anchor when least expected. It is a message to be shared.

You walk up to someone, shake their hand or wave as you hustle by. You see them often and they are a fixture. It could be a friend, a coworker, a buddy, a son, a grandchild, or any person we come into contact with. We race on by and sometimes pass on the greeting. We race about for there is always tomorrow.

This weekend, for this writer, there was to be no tomorrow for a close friend. He was an elderly pastor living in a small town with a big heart. He was a quiet man. His voice was raspy like George "Gabby" Hayes. He even resembled Gabby, "a little bit."

I often reminded him of Gabby and the similarity. In fact, on Friday night last, I said "George Hayes," not Gabby Hayes, and he told me that he never new Gabby's real name was George. For you young "whippersnappers," Gabby starred with a very young John Wayne back in the '30's and 40's. He also served as the sidekick of Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, and Gene Autry at Republic and Paramount Pictures. They were my heroes at the nine-cent Saturday double-feature matinee. Learn more

I did not know that our bit of evening bantering was to be our final goodbye. We had fun and laughed at ourselves, as friends do.

Reverend A. G. Parker also had a signature statement that he was well known by. After each prayer that opened or closed a meeting, he would say with a drawl, "I love you all - just a little." He said it thousands of times at Veterans of Foreign Wars posts throughout the states of North and South Carolina, at official events and meetings, and at monthly veterans memorial services at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina.

No one expected him to be called home while he was with us. But, as we all arose for a day of meetings, he just couldn't get going and died of heart failure. We gathered for our formal session meeting and saw an empty chair. Read story

Tempus fugit, Memento Mori

We all need to remind ourselves that none of us, nor anyone in our realm of family and friends, know when Our Lord will call us home.

So, here is my challenge to you, Brother Knights. Take time, slow down, and maybe even smell the sweet morning air. Compliment a co-worker, child, or even "Fido." Ask questions, share, care, reward, give, help, hold a hand, and say a kind word.

Don't worry about your mortality. Consider life without someone you know and have worked or played with for years. Go give them a hug. Treat each encounter as a final one. Time flies, remember death.

St. Patrick's Day Event Planned - March 17th

Are you ready to celebrate a wee bit? Do you have a little blarney in you? Are you considering dyeing your pond green like in Chicago? Why not join with the Knights of Columbus as we let our hair down a little on St. Patty's Day?

As Peter might say, "It's time for a little craic. Grab your woman, turn off the telly, and grab a few bob. Tis' time to get a wee bit polluted. D’yaknowhwatimeanlike? Be a plastic paddy for a day! 'Twil be grand."

The Council is teaming up with the Catholic Daughters of America to host a St. Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday, March 17 from 6:30-9:30 in the St. Thomas More Church Friends and Family Hall.

We will be serving corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, soda bread, cake, wine, beer, coffee and non-alcoholic beverages. For entertainment, we have a bagpipe player, Irish music, and step dancers.

Tickets are just $25 for adults and $20 for children. This includes both your meal and entertainment.

If you would like to purchase tickets, they are available after most masses, at the upcoming Pancake Breakfast, at the upcoming Lenten Fish Dinners or by simply contacting ticket sales.

Our understanding is that there are no other Churches in our area having a St. Patrick’s Day event, so please spread the word in Chapel Hill and Durham. Invite your friends. Share with them the family life and activities of Catholics in Chapel Hill.

Please help us make this a big success and the beginning of a new annual social event for the Church.

Squires' Impact is Felt

"From a mustard seed..." Our Squires were years in formation. A lot of work went into it and they are now in their second year. Do you know all of their stories of success and contribution to the St. Thomas More Church community? Did you know that their efforts continue to generate good outside of our parish community?

Their efforts to raise money last year for the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA, is just one story, but it is a gangbuster. One squire, Garcian D'Cruz was inspired by what he saw and heard that he came home and led the Squires through a project that brought recognition not only to them, but also greatly benefited the memorial and Chapel Hill High School.

Today, Garcian's Honors English teacher, Tom Stanfa, was selected as the Feb 2, 2012, Hometown Hero and winner of the Village Pride award. Mr. Stanfa was also just selected Veterans of Foreign Wars, North Carolina Department, Teacher of the Year (grades 9-12). We never know where the paths we chose will lead us, but the path we took to support a Chapel Hill Squires Circle was one of our best decisions. Thank you Jim Orbich, Ron Patterson, Drew Melvin, Jerry Pilarski, Dario Sena, Gil Montoya, John Felten, and others for nurturing these young men and future Knights of Columbus.

Free Throw Competition Set for Feb 11th

David Peters, council Free Throw Competition Chairman announced today that he has scheduled the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest at St. Thomas More Church for Saturday, February 11th at 9:00 a.m. It will be held in the School Gym.

This is open to not only St. Thomas More School students, but all students within the area. This program was started by the Knights of Columbus in 1972 and has served our youth for forty years. Many parents were themselves in the contest early in their life. The contest is open to all boys and girls ages 10 to 14.

For member knights, we ask that you share this information with your friends and family. The more students that participate makes for a more exciting event for all. Winners in each age group go on to district and state competition.

Drew Melvin - Irene Brriggaman Lifetime Achievement Award

Please join me in congratulating long time parishioner Drew Melvin who recently was selected to receive the Irene Briggaman Lifetime Achievement Award. This special award for service, named in honor of its first recipient, is presented to individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime of exceptional public service and volunteerism in the greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro community in multiple capacities with different organizations. This special honor is awarded when a nominee’s consistent volunteerism and service have made a profound impact on our community over the long term. Drew is very deserving of this award for his life time of selfless service to our local community. St. Thomas More has greatly benefited from Drew’s service and example and it brings great joy to us that he was chosen for this award. Drew will receive the award on December 13th during a 6:30 PM ceremony at University Mall.

Be sure to join him at University Mall (at the stage near Dilliard's) on Tuesday, December 13th for the award ceremony. It starts at 6:30 p.m. There are other awards and the ceremony will last until about 8 p.m. Come early, stay late.

Council Gathers for Christmas Dinner - Dec 3rd

Our council along with the Catholic Daughters of America (CDA) is hosting a family Thanksgiving/Christmas party on Saturday, December 3 at 6 PM. It will be in the old gym in the lower school.

Turkey, ham, salmon and non-alcoholic beverage will be provided. People are welcome to bring beer or wine if they like. We are asking each family to bring a salad, side or dessert. There will be no other charge.

Chapel Hill Columbian Squires - A Quest completed at Bedford, VA

And now the Squires' journey begins...

It's June 6^th and the 67^th anniversary of D-Day. The sun is coming up and it is 6 a.m. Squires have been up for awhile and they are eagerly heading for St. Thomas More Church to join other squires.

A steady stream of cars carrying veterans, seven students, counselors and teachers from Chapel Hill and Carrboro started loading and departing town. They have started their three-hour journey to Bedford, Virginia, and a veterans memorial nestled on a hillside.

Included in the travelers are local World War II veterans Jerry Pilarski, 82^nd Airborne, Gene Drogos, U.S. Navy air crewman, and Louise Drogos, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.

They were about to join others from many neighboring states heading to the National D-Day Memorial and the home of the Bedford Boys.

Their mission is to deliver $1,500 raised by the youth of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. These kids were inspired by one of their members who had visited the memorial on an earlier Chapel Hill High School field trip. Garcian D'Cruz, a 10^th grade student, was moved by the memorial and the World War II veterans he met. He was also saddened when he learned of their financial plight. He told his story to other members of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle 5485 of the Columbian Squires.

The kids decided to honor all veterans by raising money for the memorial. They purchased potted plants for resale to members of their church and used money from their other projects. Others donated cash. They raised $1,500.

The National D-Day Memorial Foundation was moved by the Squires' generosity and patriotism and invited them to participate in the 10^th Anniversary ceremony for the memorial. Garcian and Mr. Tom Stanfa, Chapel Hill High School 10th grade teacher, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with D-Day survivors, a congressman, civic leaders and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient "Woody" Williams, as special guests and speakers.

Garcian told his story to a crowd of over a thousand participants and spectators. It was a story of local kids making a difference and their efforts to help keep the memorial funded. Their mission was to help preserve the World War II veterans' legacy by “keeping their legacy living.” His remarks moved the audience. His speech served as the inspiring lead-in to a request for audience participation with a donation. Watch, listen, and be proud.

The National D-Day Memorial is ten years old and was dedicated by then President George W. Bush. It has been hit hard by our current economic situation and is fighting to raise money to keep its doors open.

The last surviving member of the Bedford Boys died in 2009 at the age of 94. He was Ray Nance.

An Awesome Day for the Squires

The Squires, members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle 5485, produced some awesome results this weekend with the fundraiser for the Memorial. They started with 160 plants. The goal was to sell 200, but only 160 would fit in Jim Orbich's truck when the plants were purchased. By the end of the 9:15 Mass, only 10 plants were left as all of the others were sold.

Plant sales produced $800.00 minus the $340.00 which was the wholesale price paid to purchase the plants. $460.00 profit from the plant sales. An additional $375.25 was raised from parish donations the Squire's National D-Day Memorial fundraiser. The council also contributed an additional $100.

The project goal is $2,000 and they are well on their way to making it before D-Day commemoration ceremonies in Bedford, VA.

A huge thanks goes to Tom Stanfa, a Chapel Hill High School teacher. He was on hand all morning showing a video of the Memorial and the D-Day landing site that he produced along with students from his school as part of at special project they are working on.

June 6th will be here before we know it so make plans to attend the ceremony. We will have a Squires meeting on Sunday, May 22nd to finalize the trip and work through the final details. Watch for the meeting time here.

Squires Raise Money for National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA

Nick Clemmons and Garcian D'Cruz are working on a Squires project to raise funds for the National D-Day Memorial located 120 miles north of Chapel Hill.

The squires are going to raise money by selling plants after each mass the weekend of 14-15 May. They will also work with the Knights to collect donations after the masses, too.

Did you know that St. Thomas More Church members generously donated about $4,900 on Veterans Day last year for active duty amputees who were hospitalized over the Christmas holiday period? The squires are hoping that this project will draw similar support.

The plan is to travel to the memorial and participate as invited guests on the June 6th commemoration ceremonies. Their presentation will be during the ceremony.

When Squire Garcian was asked, "Why?", he told a story of a recent visit and seeing that it needed help financially. D-Day also just happens to be remembered on its anniversary, June 6th, which is also his birthday. Garcian said, "They are having a tough time raising funds. The soldiers died for us on that day. Without that day (Operation Overlord and invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944), we would be speaking a different language today."

Garcian may be right. Many of today's citizens cannot comprehend what went on during their grandfather's or even great-grandfather's time. Our country mobilized for war and many never returned home. That is why this memorial is in Bedford, Virginia. Bedford lost two thirds of the men it sent to war. The museum is now struggling to survive. It's location near Lynchburg, VA, puts it off the main tourist paths. If you have not visited it, it is a good day trip for the family. Maybe your and your children will be moved as much as Gracian. Our squires are an exciting and energetic group. They have become a vital part of our local council by helping the Knights at special events and with the Pancake Breakfast. They are trained to cook and serve food, but, more importantly, they are learning responsibility and gain a spirit of giving back to the community. And, as seen by this current project, their reach is not limited to Chapel Hill.

The squires are also looking to connect with any parishioner who has served during World War II. Efforts are now underway to reach out to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion members who served during World War II. There are quite a few of them right here in Chapel Hill. Within the Knights we are honored to have Jerry Pilarski and Gene Drogos, among others.

The Squires are a religious youth group of catholic young men and can be compared to the Boy Scouts. They are self-governing circle and are guided by counselors from the local Knights of Columbus Council, 10910.

Exploring the Catholic Daughters of America

The ladies at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church are exploring the possibility of starting a Catholic Daughters Court and wish to invite all Catholic women 18 years and older to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 PM in room 108 (new hall).

Founded in 1903 by the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Daughters has flourished under their motto of UNITY and CHARITY. Today, they are one of the largest Catholic women’s organizations with 95,000+ members in 25 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Virgin Islands. There are currently 16 local courts in North Carolina with nearly 900 members. The nearest court is in Durham.

They are an organization through which today’s woman can create change; make a difference in today’s world; develop friendships and attain personal growth; and serve our brothers and sisters along with serving God, church, and country. Learn more...

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Visits Chapel Hill

We were honored this past Sunday by a visit by Sheila F. Storey, State Regent, and other members of the North Carolina State Court of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA). They provided information on the CDA to the women of our parish as part of their quest to build a local court at St. Thomas More Church.

The CDA are very similar to the Knights of Columbus. The CDA is the largest organization of Catholic women and has over 95,000 members. Their motto is Unity and Charity, and their works parallel that of the Knights of Columbus. Learn more...

The women of our parish have often asked, "What about us? Can we join the Knights?" The answer has always been "no," but they can do similar projects and work closely with the Squires and Knights to build our church family and to help others.

Talk to your spouses and other ladies in your family. Ask them to participate in an upcoming meeting that will talk more about the CDA. Maybe we are ready to have a CDA court in our parish. Contact the State Regent for more information.

St. Thomas More School Knights Bring Home Trophy

Our school team headed to Charlotte to compete in the Shamrock Tournament. Our school team was one of forty other boys and girls middle school basketball teams from North and South Carolina and Georgia. They took 3rd Place.

The boys team won four games out of five. They defeated St. Mary Magdalene of Apex to take the third-place spot. Read the full story...

Fish Fry Time

Jerry is ready to fry fish or pull pig anytime!

We are about to start up the fish fry pots to host another annual parish fish fry. Jerry is looking over his equipment, ordering fish and trimmings, and getting ready to go to work. This year, Matt Raynor and Gene Keeling will lead the event so that Jerry can relax a little.

The schedule is set for March 11 and 25. A third fish fry will be held on April 15th.

We need everyone to come on by to help in the kitchen. There are a lot of things done behind the scenes. None are glamorous, especially defrosting hundreds of pounds of whitefish. Then there is the breading, sorting, storing, and cooker helper chores. There is a job for everyone.

This Little Light of Mine...

"If a tree falls in the wilderness, will anyone hear it fall?" You have heard this question many, many times. You may have even pondered the answer.

"But what does that have to do with the Knights?" you ask. A lot. It describes a perception of our ministry and others of the church. We do a lot for our parish, our community of Chapel Hill, veterans, handicapped, the poor, IFC Pantry, our members in need, the hospitalized, religious orders, and countless others. True, we should not put signs on our back to announce our latest act of mercy, but we do need to share our deeds with others.

"Let your light shine before men, that they may see your fine works and give glory to your Father who is in the heaven." Matthew 5:16

What we do is not for ourselves. We raise money to give it away. We don't use it to party or to serve ourselves. Our fish fries, annual raffle, pancake breakfasts, and Operation Lamb projects benefit our church, seminarians, and mentally handicapped children.

We do a lot more than raise money. We give of ourselves. We give our time, our talents, and our personal wealth. Knights donate thousands of dollars quietly to support a local crisis. They give furniture, food, and other things to help a homeless family in our midst. They help the widow. They sponsor children in our area and overseas. They serve on boards, committees, in clubs, and charities to give even more.

We work with our youth--our future--and have just completed the formation of a Columbian Squires Circle in our parish. Our project went so well and showed what could be done, that another neighboring parish followed our lead. They, too, started a Circle.

Lighting yet another another candle of hope

We are about 120 strong, but there are hundreds of other men in our parish who are welcome to join us. What we need to do now is to show our candles of hope for the poor and suffering in our midst. We need to share our stories with everyone we meet. Let them know what the Catholic community of men in our town are doing and how they can help us do even more.

So, wear your Knights of Columbus jacket, shirt, cap or badge. Wear your regalia on all special masses and funerals. Be proud of your brotherhood and brothers. Let your light shine bright for you do His works for His children.

Free Throw Competition Winners Announced

Wil Hoyle made 14 of 15 baskets last weekend to finish with the best record overall and won his age group in the St. Thomas More Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition.

Hoyle, winning the 11 year old boys' category, was one of nine victors who qualified for the district competition. Each competitor attempted 15 baskets.

Oliver Lynch-Daniels and Johnson Carbuccia each hit 13 baskets to win the 12 and 13 year-old boys' division, respectively.

Noah Cox shot his age (ten free throws) to win the boys' 10 bracket, as did Lydia Carbuccia (11) in the Girls' 11 division. Christianna Adamson also made 11 to win the Girls' 13 division.

Jacqueline Kirsch (Girls' 12), Helen Gaynes (Girls' 14) and Connor Morphy (Boys' 14) each made ten free throws to win their age group.

The District Competition is tentative scheduled for St. Thomas More School Gym on Saturday, March 5th.

Council Supports Arc at Christmas

Our council is sponsoring a Christmas tree vignette at The Arc’s Festival of Trees, which is open to the public 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday this week (Nov 30-Dec 2) at the Sheraton Hotel, Chapel Hill.

There is also a publicly open Family Night Tuesday 5-9 p.m. with entertainment and activities. Free admittance with donations accepted. Shula’s 347 Grill is offering a special discounted dinner menu to attendees on Tuesday night, with 20% of dinner proceeds also going to The Arc.

Wednesday night is a special Ladies Night event, and Thursday night is the big gala and final auction that you can purchase tickets to for $50, if interested.

The Arc provides programs to help the intellectually disabled. The Festival of Trees is a fundraiser with 53 sponsored Christmas tree displays, 30 sponsored wreath displays, and numerous donated separate items that all get auctioned off.

Tom Stoffel, chairman of this project, has put together a fabulous vignette. Why not take time for the holidays and visit the Festival of Trees? Better yet, maybe even to bid on a display or one of the many donated single items. Single items might include a massage package, a weekend package at the beach, and a tandem skydive! You will have to attend to find out what they are!

A Dream Fulfilled - Chapel Hill Squires Circle

We have talked about it, attempted to ignite interest, held meetings and always seemed to come up short. This year, however, everything seemed to come together and on November 14th the long awaited dream of a Chapel Hill Knights of Columbus became a reality.

Twenty-four young men gathered to form the first Squires Circle. The investiture ceremonial was conducted by he North Carolina State Squires Investiture Team, headed by Squire Chairman David Taylor and Chief Counselor Bob White. Present at the ceremonial were officers and members of the parent council, 10910. District Deputy Don Williams and several members from the Fayetteville and Sanford Councils also attended.

The Squires Circle is composed of 10 to 18 year old Catholic men of the community. The new Squires are considered Charter Members and all were recruited from the St. Thomas More School, Youth Ministry, Altar Ministry, and Hispanic Ministry.

The Squires Circle is an official organization of the Knights of Columbus. Its primary objective is the development of leadership skills of our young men through spiritual, circle, membership, and service activities, such as planning, participation and active involvement in religious, social, athletic, and civic programs. They are guided and supervised by a team of Knights, that are fully certified as Squires Counselors. from their parent council, but they develop and manage their circle.

The new squires will develop their skills to build confidence, trustworthiness, loyalty, piety, honesty, humility and charity.

Pancakes, Eggs, and a Great Morning

The Knights have brought back the monthly St. Thomas More Pancake breakfast! This continues the hard work of the Men's Club and a tradition of building church through parish family events. There will be the familiar faces of Knights, Men's Club, and many of the youth from the TYM.

Breakfast is from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Scrambled eggs have been added to the menu and there is a change in location! We will host each breakfast in the new Parish Hall. Service will be much faster. We will use the new serving lines and serve you as you come in. Not to worry, we will still bring to the tables a tray offering seconds.

The price is still $6. So, bring along your friends and extended family. It is one of the best breakfast deals in town.

Squires Investiture November 14th

The first Columbian Squires Circle sponsored by Paul J. Trageser Chapel Hill Council 10910 has its investiture on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010

It will be held in the St. Thomas More Parish Hall at 3:00 PM. Sixteen charter members will be invested. A small reception with families of the Squires will follow. Knights from the Council and Assembly are invited to join in the ceremonial.

Is your son ready to join? It is never too late to join. We will take walk-in's up to the day and start of the ceremonial.

The squires are a self-governing circle guided by our fully certified counselor Knights. It is a great opportunity to build leadership skills through adventure, sports, entertainment, and acts of charity.

The squires first circle meeting will be scheduled for a date after the investiture. This meeting will nominate and elect the officers. They will also select the circle's name.

Squire's Circle Formation!

Our hard work and many hours of meeting with local church youth groups paid off this week. Curious children met with their parents and council Squire's Counselors at a packed open house at the new St. Thomas More Parish Hall.

Led by Chief Counselor Jim Orbich, the local youth learned about the history of the Knights of Columbus and the importance of their youth group, the Columbian Squires. They learned that the kids provide the leadership and run their own local circle. The counselors, five in all, are "hands off" and only provide guidance, support and help the youth.

When asked if they were ready to form a circle, they raised their hands enthusiastically. Thirteen kids said yes and that was more than enough to form a local St. Thomas More Columbian Squires Circle.

The investiture of the Circle will take place at a special ceremony on November 14th, at 3 p.m. at St. Thomas More Church Parish Hall, Room 108. This ceremony is open only to squires charter-members and member Knights of Columbus.

There is still time for local Catholic youth, boys ages 10-18, are eligible to join. Interested youth should contact Jim Orbich.

Squire's Call - Open House

A Columbian Squire's Call Open House is set for Tuesday, Oct 19th. It will be in the new St. Thomas More Parish Building, Room 109.

The Squires are for 10 - 18 year-old kids, grandsons, and Catholic friends with potential young kids.

Our Council's aim is to build the leadership quality of the kids (maybe your own), through excellent and fun-filled leadership activities and programs with guidance by our own certified counselors.

Oktoberfest 2010

In just two short weeks we will host our 4th Annual Oktoberfest at St. Thomas More Church. The date is October 10th at 5 p.m. in the new parish hall. This event is open to the community of Chapel Hill, but tickets are limited to 300.

This is a very old fall tradition in the German communities. Our church is rich in cultural heritage with members from around the world. Oktoberfest is just one of our celebrations in support of our parish.

Our Oktoberfest includes Oktoberfest locally brewed beer, wine, brats, barbecued chicken, and German potato salad. All this and three hours of great family fun and music for just $25. Our event is a family event, so we include children for $12. Of course, their ticket includes soda pop.

You should include this event on your list of must do events. It is fun, fun, fun. We encourage you to wear traditional Oktoberfest attire. That includes Alpine hats, lederhosen, and other finery. Need more information on what will give you the right look? Learn more...

Annual event to honor parish priests

The Council 10910 fourth annual Priest Appreciation Dinner will be on September 9 at La Residence Restaurant & Bar, 202 West Rosemary St, Chapel Hill.

We will gather at 6 pm for cocktails and sit down for dinner at 6:30. Cost will be $30 per person. Price includes salad, dinner, iced tea, coffee, tax and tip. There will also be a cash bar. Family members and friends are invited.

Knights Honor Parish and Local Priests and Religious

The Council was well represented this past Wednesday as they gathered with their spouses to honor the local priests of St. Thomas More Church and the Newman Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

They joined together at the Durham University Club (17 stories up and overlooking Durham and Orange Counties). It was a large gathering that took advantage of the Club's weekly member buffet.

This gave the Council members an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of our priests. They work hard for us and sure deserved a chance to break away for a few hours.

Remember, too, that we should recognize our priests, religious, and lay leaders all year through. Invite them to your home for an afternoon or evening. If you have a special event or family gathering, consider inviting them. They may not be able to attend, but you may be making an offer that fits right in. They are part of our family.

Priest Appreciation Night

The Priests and religious team members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church will be honored on Sep 9th at the Durham University Club.

This is an annual event hosted by the Knights of Columbus to recognize the significant contributions of our church leaders. We are nothing without their leadership and spiritual guidance.

Durham University Club sits high atop the Durham Tower building--17 floors up with a 360 degree view of Durham and Orange Counties. The University Club is a Four-Star restaurant that serves elegant dinners and lunches that are beautiful to the eye and a great delight to all.

Free Throw Competition Held

It was a misty Saturday morning with the threat of rain, but the kids came anyway for a chance to throw a basketball from the foul line. Luckily, the rain held off until late in the morning. The kids were cold, but dry.

The winners will join the council members at their February meeting to receive their awards, trophies, and to meet members of the council.

New Member Orientation and Open House - Nov 13th

Laney Rollins has been hard at work pulling a team of dedicated knights together just for you. If you are a new knight this event is for you. It is also a great event for our long-standing knights. What better way to get caught up with what is going on with the council than to attend an open house.

It is this Thursday, November 13th, at 7 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room. Here is Laney's announcement:

Our council will have one of the most important gatherings of the year, a chance to welcome prospective members into our organization. I have sent out 27 invitations, and we need a good showing from our membership. We have had a very active and successful year, and we have accomplished much for our faith and our community. There are many demands on your time, but please remember that this is something we do for ourselves. New members are the lifeblood of any organization. We are no different. Our leadership is the best in the state. Here's what they say about Chapel Hill, "They've got it!" LAMB Drive Coming Sep 26-28th

It's that time of year again. It is time to help those in our community that are less fortunate. Our Project, Operation LAMB takes it name and mission from the biblical passage, "..whatever you have done for the Least Among My Brethren... You have done unto me..". Our quest is simple. There are children and young adults in our town who have mental disabilities. We are raising money in our community to help them.

Brothers Kevin Wolff and Ed Kaiser have stepped up to co-chair the Operation LAMB activities for the council but they need your help. They have arranged for ten sites on the last weekend of September. In order to be successful, we need 174 volunteers.

Yes, that's right, 174 volunteers. We want this to be the most successful Operation LAMB we've ever had. Helping out is not hard. You just need to donate (at least) two hours of your time to stand in front of a store, hand out Tootsie Rolls and collect money. It's also a great way to involve the family.

PLEASE, consider giving at least two hours of your time on either the 26th, 27th or 28th to help this wonderful cause. If you have one or more family members that can help, that's even better.

Father Michael J. McGivney Declared "Venerable"

An American priest of humble beginning pulled local men together to provide for the families of deceased parishioners. That beginning has created a world-wide organization of men serving their local priests, their parishes and their communities.
On Saturday, March 15th, the Pope declared Fr. Michael J. McGivney a "Venerable Servant of God." This declaration is a critical step on the path to sainthood. Fr. McGivney may one day be declared a Saint, and he would be the first American priest so honored.

Newman Students Need Our Support

If you left church in a rush today, you missed the smiling faces of two UNC Chapel Hill students from the Newman Center. Your editor spotted them and stopped by.

I spoke with Kelly Dunlap. She was announcing their Alternative Spring Break activity. No, they are not Daytona Beach bound, and they are passing Ft. Lauderdale by too. So, where are they headed? To Montego Bay, Jamaica.

No beach parties for these students. They are on a mission of mercy and will work with handicapped children at one of the Mustard Seed orphanages scattered all over the island. That is where we come in. The students are selling tickets to a Silent Auction, Friday, Feb 1st, from 8 to 12 p.m. Tickets are just $30 per person. There will be wine, finger foods, and a chance to bid on auction items.

Some you are muttering as you read this. Yes, $30 is a little steep for wine and finger foods, but, wait. It is not about what we get for our $30. It is what you are enabling them to do with your money. You are empowering our youth to make a difference where it counts. Your editor applauds their drive, compassion and vision. I'll be there with Yoli. How about you?

You can order your tickets by contacting the Newman Center and asking for tickets. Can't attend? Call and ask them where to send a personal donation. Next, pick up the phone and call your Grand Knight. Tell him you support a motion to make a Council contribution of $100.

Parish Priest's Appreciation Dinner

About forty Knights and their ladies joined together last night, September 5th, to honor our parish priest, Fr. John Durbin, at the La Residence in Chapel Hill.

After an open bar cocktail social gathering, everyone moved to the outdoor patio for dinner under the stars. The meal was served family style and included four courses. There were heavy hors'deuves at the bar and again on the patio. This was followed by a salad buffet. Then, to the delight and surprise of all, we were presented with the main course. Splendid, elegant, beyond expectation, all hint at the beautiful presentation of our main course.

There was a huge selection. Each dish drew "Oohs" and "Ahhs" from the ladies. There was something sure to delight everyone. There was prime rib, trout with red potatoes and corn sauce, lamb with Southern grits, salmon with Peruvian potato salad, and roasted pork chops sliced thick and served with creamed potatoes. There was a nice selection of steamed vegetables, too.

Dinner was followed by coffee and sweet treats of strawberries, puffed pastries with filling and chocolate, and dainty morsels of pecan pie squares.

It was one of those meals that is sure to be described over and over. (If you missed the event, well... there is always a next time. )

District Deputy (9) Haddon Ware and his wife also joined us as guests.

Many thanks to Grand Knight Gil Montoya for arranging for this event, and to Deputy Grand Knight Gene Keeling and his lovely wife, Lisa, for hosting it. "I was worried about the attendance," Gene said, "but at the last minute it all came together and we have a great showing."

Fr. Durbin was much appreciative of the display of support by his Knights and their families. He commended the knights not just for their work in the parish, but for their extended service to the local community through projects to help the handicapped, feed the poor, and to serve their neighbors. "These are the kinds of things that really make a difference," he said.

We are all humbled and proud to be of service to the community, but our work is just a flicker of light when compared to the sacrifices and service to our parish and church by our Fr. John Durbin.

We look forward to making this an annual event. Won't you join us next time?

The restaurant La Residence is owned and operated by parishioners. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to dine there. It will be an evening to remember.

Oktoberfest Coming September 21st

John Felten is heading up our first annual Oktoberfest.

The Little German Band and Dancers are joining us and is providing the music and show. This group has been performing since 1971 and has toured in several European countries and has performed at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, in September 1996.

Our meal is catered by the Guglhupf Bakery & Patisserie of Durham. "It's in the bread..."

Between the band, beer, and bread you are sure to find the evening to be enjoyable and memorable.

The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. One price fits all. Everything is included. That is food and beer (two glasses included with meal).

What's on the menu? Brats, potato salad, sauerkraut, rolls and beer. We will have Black Forest Cake, tea, coffee, pretzels and potato chips for snacks.

Our host servers are the St. Thomas More Men's Club. Dessert, snacks and coffee are presented by various church ministries.

The keeper of the tickets is Brother Knight Gene Keeling, but many of our knights will have a few to sell you. The price is $25 per person. Tickets are required to enter and are limited as this is a catered affair.

This event is open to all members of the parish and to our neighbors as well.

If you like this event, watch for upcoming ethnic events. Be it Polish, Italian, Mexican, English, or Irish, where there are Catholics there you will find celebrations with good food, good friends, and the common bond of family and church. We are building Family in the Knights of Columbus.

Council Newsletter - Where did it go?

The next edition will be a photo collage of council events so far this year. We'll take a look at what we have been doing. You may be amazed, for we have been a very active council.

First Monday Meeting Change - Jan 8th

New Assembly for Chapel Hill - Durham

The Chapel Hill Knights of the Fourth Degree will hold a formation meeting for a Chapel Hill Assembly on Thursday, August 17^th. The formation meeting will be held in at St. Thomas More church at 7:30 p.m.

When would the Assembly take form? This is up to the charter knights. However, since the October Exemplification will include several Chapel Hill and Durham knights, it may be best to form in November. This will permit each of the newest Sir Knights to be part of the formation. It is an honor to be a Charter Member of a Fourth Degree Assembly.

Who should attend? All members of the Fourth Degree. This meeting is also open to any Third Degree knight preparing for the October Exemplification. Each is eligible to hold an office in the new Assembly.

Location of the Assembly. Although the Assembly has its roots in Chapel Hill, it is for all members of the Fourth Degree in the Chapel Hill – Durham areas. Therefore, we should not think of it as an Assembly “just for Chapel Hill.” The Chapel Hill Council’s roots and historical ties are to our brother Knights in Durham. The Durham Council was once the "Durham-Chapel Hill Council" and provided a home council for the few knights then residing in Chapel Hill.

Assembly Meeting Locations. Meetings can be held both in Durham and Chapel Hill. Our third meeting is traditionally a social event with spouses. The social events are held in local restaurants selected by the members.

What is the purpose of this particular meeting? We have finished the Assembly exploratory phase. We know that there is a desire and need for a Chapel Hill Assembly. This meeting is where we enter the “commitment” phase. We will now

Confirm our desire to start an Assembly,
Select our Charter officers,
Select a name for the Assembly,
Decide on a regularly scheduled meeting night and location,
and approve our Assembly by-laws.

Do we have enough members? Thirty members are required to form a new Assembly. We have over thirty members of the Fourth Degree in the Chapel Hill council. Additionally, we have in hand two requests for transfer to the new assembly from members outside of the council.

Assembly Officers needed. Officer positions parallel those of a council; only the names are slightly different. Officers are drawn from the charter members. They can be from Chapel Hill or a Durham council. The critical positions (those needing men with a strong commitment to nurture and grow the Assembly) are:

Faithful Navigator
Faithful Captain
Faithful Pilot
Faithful Comptroller –Financial Secretary equivalent
Faithful Purser – Treasurer equivalent
Faithful Scribe

What is expected of meeting attendees? Come to the meeting prepared to help make the tough decisions needed to form an Assembly. Bring your thoughts on who should fill these positions. You should consider your fellow Sir Knights as candidates.

Who would you like to see fill the core positions? Encourage them to consider accepting the position, if elected. You can even nominate yourself. But, unlike a council, it is not unusual to have the Faithful Comptroller, Purser and Recorder serve for many years. These three positions require more work of the men who take on the responsibility, but each position is key to the success of an Assembly. No one should accept a nomination to them without considering fully the responsibilities they are accepting.

A time for inner reflection and prayer. If you are not sure if you want to hold a position that you know you are qualified for, consider a mini-retreat in the presence of the Holy Eucharist. Remembering the words of a hymn, "Whom shall I send?" Ask yourself, "Is it I Lord?"

Next Fish Fry is April 7th

We just closed the doors after serving over 220 dinners! That is 100 more than our first fish fry.
We started with 100 lbs of fish and had to go and get another 20 pounds.

We were running out as early as 6 p.m. and people patiently waited in line for more fish to arrive.

Everything worked out well. We cooked the extra 20 pounds and served everyone. We sold out again.

Get ready for the next one and come early! The food is great and there is plenty on your plate. Remember that we cook it just as you arrive. It is a restaurant quality meal, served piping hot!

Proceeds benefit the parish and will go to paying off the mortgage.

Fish Fry March 24th

Here we go again! Our second fish fry is going to be an even greater success than the last one. How big a success was it? Well, we SOLD OUT! Sold 130 meals and we could have sold more.

It will be in the school gym. Time is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Be on time and you are sure to get your share. We only charge $7 per plate. Have kids? We will give you a spare plate to share. The plate has two large pieces of whitefish from the cool oceans off Argentina. That is why it tasted so good and we sold out.

Now that everyone has tasted the fish and know how great it is, we are expecting a large crowd.

Profits go to the church mortgage retirement.

Annual Free Throw Competition this Month

Richard Honey is again leading the Annual Chapel Hill Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition. Set your calendars for Saturday, January 21st, at the St. Thomas More School Gym.

Christmas Party December 16th

PGK Tom Chegash has reserved Captain John's Dockside Seafood Restaurant for a Council Christmas Party on December 16th. Time is 6 p.m., sit down at 6:30. The dinner is open to Knights and their families. Interested candidates are also invited to attend.

You can order off the menu. Meals are about $8.99, with senior plates for about $5.99.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a gag gift with a value of about $5.00. Mark the gift as to recipient (man or women). One gift should be brought by each attendee.

The restaurant is on US 15-501 at Cole Park Plaza. The highway is now completed and it is four lanes of good road from Chapel Hill.

Memorial Mass - November 5th

Our annual Council Memorial Mass is set for Saturday, November 5th. This is for the 5:15 p.m. mass.

This mass is to remember all council knights who have passed on while a member of our council. Sir Knight Terry Tinker is chairman and you can contact him for additional details.

This is a tuxedo affair for all Fourth Degree Knights. Third Degree Knights wear a suit or sport jacket and tie. Fourth Degree Knights will serve as an honor guard.

All knights should attend and bring their ladies.

Please note that this is the first Saturday of the month. There is a small after the mass reception for all attendees. Wine is served.

Thanksgiving Pot Luck and Turkey Dinner

Mark your calendars for November 16th. It's time for our Fall council get together. Gene Keeling and his lovely wife will prepare the turkeys. You just bring in a side dish or dessert for at least six people. Not sure what to bring? Then do the A-K does a sidedish and L-Z does dessert.

We'll do it in the Multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. Remember that this is a family affair. You can bring them.

Bishop Gossman's Piedmont Deanery Mass a Success

Thank you, thank you, to all of the council and Burlington knights who participated in the bishop's farewell mass for the Piedmont Deanery.

We had six Knights in full regalia and three in social regalia.

All nine formed the Bishop's Honor Guard and processed into the church to lead the religious, clergy, and Bishop into and out of the main church. It was beautiful and inspiring to all. Watch for pictures on our web site at www.kofc10910.org.

About a dozen other knights and their ladies were peppered throughout the church audience.

The comments from the St. Thomas More parish members and our guests were very much full of praise and appreciation for our participation. One of the priests (Siler City) was very proud of the knights in regalia and made it a point to commend each of us. He is also a member of the Fourth Degree and was proud to share this with us.

Sorry for the late release of this request, but the Knights of Chapel Hill have been requested to provide an honor guard for the Bishop's mass this Wednesday, September 28th.

It is time to dust off your tuxes. The Bishop is having a Mass right here at St. Thomas More Church on September 28th. The mass celebrates his 50th Anniversary and retirement.

Sir Knight Bob Wirth is coordinating participation by our council as attendees as ushers or honor guard. Fourth Degree Knights should arrive NLT 30 minutes before the mass. The mass is at 7 p.m. If you are in the honor guard, allow time to put on your regalia. NO SWORDS are used in this event. If you can not participate in the honor guard, show up in your social regalia and serve as an usher. Knights of the Fourth Degree will sit together as a group.

The church is on the NC54/US 15-501 bypass at 940 Carmichael St. Coming from Burlington, it is the light after the light for the Dean Smith Center and NC Memorial Hospital. Use maps.google.com a a good map. The church and school are co-located

There is a reception immediately following the mass. We need your R.S.V.P. that you are participating so that we can ensure you are included in the reception head count.

UNC vs. Virginia Game Gatekeepers Needed

Fr. Phillip Leach at the Newman Center needs our help.
It seems that the students are gone the weekend of October 22nd and that is a game weekend. They are in desperate need of 30 volunteers to man the gates and collect tickets.
If you are a Tarheel fan, this is your chance to help. Here is how:
You must wear khaki pants/shorts, plan white shirt with collar, closed toed shoes. Appearance is important.
Volunteers should report to Gate 2. We have four parking passes for the NC 54 lot which can be provided to some volunteers the week before. Groups can carpool!.
You will need to be there two and a half hours before kickoff and stay until halftime. All volunteers get a pass for lunch and a drink. We don't know what the game time is yet, but we'll tell you in plenty of time (usually two weeks before the game) to make final plans.
Brother Knight Connie Raber, our Parish Roundtable Chair, is the council contact for this project. He needs your help.

Star Council Award Presentation by PSD David Onofrio

Let's fill the council chambers this Wednesday, September 21st. Past State Deputy David Onofrio is coming to our meeting.
The visit is to present our Grand Knight, William Jackson, with his SECOND CONSECUTIVE Award of the Knights of Columbus Star Council Award.
What an honor for our council. What a tribute to all brother Knights who helped make our 2004-2005 council year a tremendous success.

Working with Parish Youth on Sunday Nights

Bob Wirth needs Knights for Sunday Night security and traffic control. We did this last year and it was of great benefit.
Did you know that we were recognized this past year by the Supreme Council for this project?
Now is your chance to work with families and kids. Our kids look up to the Knights. They enjoy being around us and see us as very positive role models. Volunteers work with the TYM Director, Bob Cui (pronounced quee). You can reach him through the parish office at 942-1040.
Bob is a Third Degree Knight and is veryinterested in establishing a Squires program. Let's him him in this very important ministry.

District Master Bob Singer just reported that we only have 27 rooms (all doubles) left for Saturday night lodging. King-equipped rooms are now gone for Saturday. This means that if you have not reserved a room, you need to get on the phone to the Durham Sheraton!
